Via Indirect Messaging

Yesterday I told my older brother, "I need you to set something straight..."

I told Dad: I am 31 and I need to catch up on debt and I feel like I won't be able to start buying anything for 2 more years and it's frustrating

He said: you're 31 now, imagine if you would have started ten years ago

I said: yes.... if only my parents would have taught me... 🤣

He said: I've been telling you to save your whole life

I said: oh yes!! I have ZERO recollection of you or my mom advising or teaching me about saving money

He said: I have taught all of you the same thing and only one of you listened and that's why he's my favorite [implying you] is this your perspective as well??

because I feel like you have your own unique wisdom, vision, and sense of security that drove you to save.

not any guidance from our parents.

or am I wrong?

     To which he replied:

I don’t think you’re wrong and I don’t think dad is wrong either. I’m definitely a product of my environment and I do feel like I’m fairly good at learning from other people’s mistakes. Growing up poor, you have to ask yourself what makes someone poor. Is all external forces or are there internal forces at play as well? And the answer is there are both at play. I learned from mom and dad the importance of saving money, because watching mom struggle is something I want to avoid like the plague. And dad being more so materialistic, you learn you can have everything the world still has to offer and it still won’t be enough. You’ll always want more. I try to be somewhere in the middle. Enough money to my name I don’t struggle and not waste my money on materialistic things that only have a momentary gain.
